Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
