At least thirteen people killed and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
